Southwest Announces New Boarding Process

November 8th, 2007 · No Comments

Southwest Airlines, the Texas-based airline known for its low fares and egalitarian approach to customers, announced a plan to target coveted business travelers by offering them two perks. The perks are the opportunity to board first and free cocktails once the plane is in the air.

This new offer is part of the “Business Select” package. Priced about 10% higher than the normal nonrefundable fares, Business Select guarantees the opportunity to board among the first group and a free cocktail once the plane is in the air. They also announced that the airline will now hold places in its “A” boarding line for travelers that log more than 32 flights in a year or purchase 16 round-trip flights.

The airline also announced plans to upgrade seating at gates across the country to include plush seating and internet connection for business travelers. The website is also going to undergo a major overhaul. The grid system that has been used in the past year. Flights will now be grouped into three categories: “Business Select”, “Business”, and “Wanna Get Away”.

All of these changes are designed to lure those oft sought business travelers from traditionally business friendly carriers such as Chicago-based United.

The big risk in all of this is the possibility of alienating customers that love the airlines’ transparent pricing and egalitarian treatment of all customers. The CEO claims that they will still love all customers equally.
