Labor groups are pressing the Federal Election Commission to start an investigation into Wal-Mart Stores Inc. The groups allege the company advised employees that electing Democratic officials would lead to the strengthening of unions. Under federal election law, companies are not allowed to persuade wage workers to vote for a specific candidate.
The controversy started after a front page article ran in the Wall Street Journal claiming Wal-Mart organized meetings to discuss legislation. Wal-Mart is welcoming an investigation and claims that it will find nothing wrong was done.
