Check Cashing Business Not Permitted

August 26th, 2008 · No Comments

The Greenville City Council denied AnyKind Checks Cashed Inc. the right to stay in business during a public hearing Monday night. An attorney argued that an exception should be made as the business had existed for more than 20 years and was a “mom and pop” shop.

However, it violated a zoning rule that went into effect in 2006. This rule requires check cashing businesses to move outside of commercial areas as soon as their leases expire.

Unions Pressure Wal-Mart

August 14th, 2008 · No Comments

Labor groups are pressing the Federal Election Commission to start an investigation into Wal-Mart Stores Inc. The groups allege the company advised employees that electing Democratic officials would lead to the strengthening of unions. Under federal election law, companies are not allowed to persuade wage workers to vote for a specific candidate.

The controversy started after a front page article ran in the Wall Street Journal claiming Wal-Mart organized meetings to discuss legislation. Wal-Mart is welcoming an investigation and claims that it will find nothing wrong was done.

Seven Sick Days

August 6th, 2008 · No Comments

A proposal in Ohio would require employers to provide seven paid sick days to their employees. This would apply to employers with a minimum of 25 employees who work at least 30 hours a week. The bill is expected to affect 2.2 million Ohioans.

The petition currently has twice the number of required signatures. However, the Governor is against the measure. He feels it will reduce jobs.
